There are many methods for dealing with the physical and emotional causes and effects of stress. You can find help for both short term relief and long term cures when it comes to your stress level. However, a lot of things that people try, in order to alleviate their stress, actually end up having the opposite result. Things can go awry in more ways that you or I can count. These are some of the things that usually go wrong.

Some people will unknowingly hurt themselves while they try to deal with the unhappiness that comes with stress.

Stress can lead to being short-tempered, which may cause you to lash out at those who are closest to you. It can drive some to excessive alcohol or coffee consumption, and the result of high caffeine intake can lead to more stress symptoms. This can bring on negative behaviors such as being pushy, or physically attacking others.

When people feel tense and worried, they very often suffer from insomnia. It is hard to let go and make yourself relaxed enough to fall asleep if you have some kind of a problem nagging at you. Even if you are able to get to sleep, you will rarely sleep the whole night through, and you will be easily disturbed.

While taking a medication to help with sleep can be helpful for a short term fix, in the long run it can cause dependence and be self defeating. Try easy to use meditation techniques to help you relax and ease your mind.

Some individuals have a naturally heightened focus on problem solving. Remember though, that thinking about the problem nonstop will do nothing to make you feel more relaxed! Try putting yourself in someone else’s shoes so that you can look at your problem from a different perspective. We usually have no problems realizing how other people should handle their situations.

Some folks try to deal with worries by doing what they think is right, even if it is mostly for faulty reasons. Becoming overly involved in work projects is a way to avoid one’s issues at home. Yet avoiding your issues will only temporarily work, and it is not a long-term solution.

Some problems will simply vanish on their own if you ignore them long enough, so this can occasionally be a feasible practice; however, the underlying causes of chronic stress are still there, even when one is trying to avoid thinking about them. It is better for your health and sanity to take a break and get your emotions under control long enough to gain a fresh perspective. Excessive avoidance of problems is not a healthy approach.

All of these misguided and ineffective solutions have something in common. The problem is that reality remains, even when you are trying to avoid thinking about it. Real life is not always pleasant or convenient. There will always be speed bumps down the road of life, that get in the way of achieving your goals. These obstacles and the effort it takes to get through them, along with our own self doubt, all lead to stress.
